Looks like there's a new space race going on. Jeff Bezos and his (secretive) company Blue Origin, Elon Musk and his company SpaceX (PayPal), and John Carmack and his company Armadillo Aerospace (Doom and Quake), and Burt Rutan and his company Scaled Composites, are all building rocket companies.
Looks like they might all be going for the X Prize, a $10 million award offered by the New Spirit of St. Louis® Organization. The prize goes to the first team that:
* Privately finances, builds & launches a spaceship, able to carry three people to 100 kilometers (62.5 miles)
* Returns safely to Earth
* Repeats the launch with the same ship within 2 weeks
